History

The name of the town is a derived word from’mansur” the exotic Himalayan shrub that is indigenous within the locality. Mussoorie was founded in the year 1803 when Gorkhas were under Umer Singh Thapa took over their territory in the Garhwal region. Then, with the British invasion the Gorkhas lost their territory and were incorporated into the British government. In 1825 the British military officer Captain Young was able to re-establish this hilltop as a holiday city.
